Nearly every class I taught for Lane Community College (The Addictive Behavior Series, The African American Experience (ES 221, 222, 223) is available on YouTube. I am offering them here as well because the information is largely still useful.

CPSY 200 Understanding Addictive Behavior: Basic training for addictions mental health workers, used to a 12-Step mode of treatment, they were introduced to Basic Pharmacology, Counseling Theory, Blood Borne Pathogens, Culturally Specific Treatment, etc.

CPSY 195 Introduction to Addictive Behavior: This class was created because “civilians” were taking CPSY 200, which was intended to train paid professionals in a “2-Year” certification program. Civilians, needed to understand addiction dynamics from a prevention / self-care point of view. At the time, the “industry” felt practitioner self-care needs were being taken care of by attending 12-Step meetings. I disagreed, and created this class which could be taken as a pre-requisite to develop self-care skills before you go into active training and practice.

OFFLINE BRICK AND MORTAR CLASSES

Developed and taught in an offline environment, but can be developed for online delivery for the usual curriculum development and delivery fees.

Coping Skills for Stress and Depression: Mental & Emotional Health in a Community College Environment. (Breath work, Diverse Optimal Psychology)

Traditional Treatment: Native American & African-American Treatment: Native American Post-Colonial Psychology, African-American Reality Therapy

Back On Course: The Recovery Center Version: A Radical Restructuring of Skip Downing’s model of the class, infused with Trauma Informed Education, for college success for non-traditional students.

Cultural Competency for Human Services: Also a restructuring of a class originally designed to infuse diversity awareness (Race, Gender, Class, LGBTQA) into human services. Using the CRASH Construct developed by Remie Calalang and myself in 3003. CRASH is a construct to understand and apply Intersectionality.

Transforming Addictive Organizations: Part of the Ethnics of Addictions Counselors includes systemic change for institutions and organizations. This training / class was developed for addiction / mental health practitioners to maintain optimal health and apply self-care, while engaging in health promotion and community organizing strategies. Of course, addictive organizations (Government, Military, Corporate, Religious, Educational etic) resist change, even when it’s in their best interest in carrying out their mission. (Much like an individual addict / alcoholic). Therefore this class was covertly infused, but collected in a private collection referred to as The Prevention Guerilla Field Manual. There is Conventional Drug War, waged by Addictive Organization, which of course doesn’t require much effective change, and there is the ongoing efforts of prevention guerillas, who though outfunded, out-staffed, out-gunned can do effective things, and transform lives. But Addictive Organizations resist their efforts.

Understanding Addictive Behavior - Drug 101

Counseling Psychology 200: This was a week long course offered by the State of Oregon, and was translated into an 11 week classroom course called Understanding Addictive Behavior. CPSY 200 was the basic training for Addiction Workers, and was originally called "Drug 101". This was a week long residential course that included basic pharmacology, physiology, and street wisdom, as well as being able to read academese & medicalese (The Physicians Desk Reference), DSM-IV, DSM-IVR, DSM-5, and translate those into layman’s term for clients and practitioners.

Naturally, you should be aware some of this information is triggering. Intentionally.

Generally speaking, as an industry we don’t offer this training until 3 continuous years of abstinence and sobriety (these are not the same thing). You take this class to make steps towards being able to treat others. There is an additional two year training requirement which this class counts towards.

The African-American Experience

These classes represent my home training. My family were slaves who taught each other how to read when it was a known death sentence. The Native side, could pass for Black in all-Black towns in the segregated South. I got tired of the Columbus Discovered America and Slavery Improved Black people by uplifting them from Savagery. That last view was actually taught in American History class at Lane Community College. I represented the standard curriculum I got in school. I was taught differently at home. Grandpa (The Rev. C.A. Washington, Solid Rock Baptist Church, Oakland, CA) was a Black Liberation Theologist, as well as a Race Man. He taught me “Jesus was Black, and his name isn’t Jesus”. Find the name his momma gave him (Ia-shua / Ieshua), find the Word (The Peshitta) in his original language, (Aramaic), the original cross, an ankh, and you will find a key for the liberation of humanity. The African-American Experience started with 3 sections (ES 221 Down From the Pyramids Up From Slavery 15,000 – 1899 CE), ES 222 Aspiration Reconstruction to WW II), ES 223 A Luta Continua: The Struggle Continues 1945 – 2019). The idea is if you encompass a time period from 10 – 15,000 BCE Before the Common Era, to Now 2019, you go from pre-Dynastic Egypt (What do you need to create a pyramid society?), to how do you have a Pre-Columbian African Presence in Turtle Island (North, Central, and South America)? Finally, being able to see our world in an egalitarian, non-white supremacist historical narrative.

This was also the basis for the creation of the curriculum for Lane Community Colleges African-American Rites of Passage Summer Academy Program for youth: 1994 – 2019.

I based my one-time delivery of The African-American Experience in Eugene, Oregon, ES 399 delivered Spring Term 2017, at the University of Oregon Ethnic Studies Department.
